Artist Statement

Detecting human forms within a landscape is akin to the phenomenon of Pareidolia, where our minds recognize familiar objects or patterns, such as faces, when we gaze at the sky. This captivating occurrence influences brain function and brain waves, offering a shared experience that resonates with those who have high visual perception and creative inclinations. For me, landscape art is a primary form of expression, providing a therapeutic calm that feels almost meditative. I view it as a valuable tool, often utilized in art therapy and other healing practices to ignite creativity and offer a channel for emotional release. The concept of Pareidolia beautifully complements this expressive quality.

In my work, I incorporate symbols of my homeland, such as the Malaysia, Selangor flags and Jata Negara, as pareidolia subjects within the landscape, grounding my art in a sense of place, identity, and patriotism. On large horizontal canvas series, the rich black and brown tones from bitumen evoke a sense of vintage nostalgia, inviting viewers to explore their own patterns and shapes. Each piece becomes a personal and reflective experience, prompting them to reminisce about their own moments of pareidolia, as well as their connections to these powerful national and regional symbols.

“Surrounded by the beauty of landscapes and nature, I feel an overwhelming sense of peace and inspiration. The colors, the textures and the way the light dances through the trees, it all stirs something deep within me. There’s a sense of connection, almost like nature is telling me its story and I can’t help but feel drawn to capture it. It’s in those moments of stillness and wonder that I find the urge to create. Through my art, I try to express the emotions, memories and beauty I feel, hoping to share that sense of awe and connection with others.”
